Would you expect alpha factor (from yeast mating) to have a "signal sequence?" Why or why not?
Alpha factor from yeast mating does have a signal sequence.
Yeast cells of mating type generally produce a peptide pheromone called alpha factor which is derived from precursor polypeptide. I am proving that alpha factor have signal sequence with an instance, alpha factor will get translocated in endoplasmic reticulum, glycosylated and proteolytically processed in Golgi and secretary vesicles. Mutations in signal sequence of alpha factor causes reduction in rate of translocation into endoplasmic reticulum. Proteolytic processing will also be reduced by signal sequence. Hence signal sequence and its mutation has a strong effect over translocation and glycosylation.
