Would you expect prokaryotic proteins to have signal peptides? Why or why not?
Prokayotic proteins have signal peptides. Besides plasma membrane, majority of prokaryotes lack membrane bound organelles as found in eukaryotes, therfore meachanism of protein targetting in prokaryotes is much less complex. prokaryotes usually assemble proteins in various types of inclusions such as gas vesicles or storage granules. most prokaryotic membrane-bound and secretory proteins are targeted to the plasma membrane by either a co-translation pathway that uses bacterial SRP (signal recognition particle) or a post-translation pathway that requires SecA and SecB.
