How is CAM photosynthesis different from C3 and C4 photosynthesis? Please explain in terms of WHEN the light independent reactions happen and WHERE they happen.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Ans- The plant which store the energy from the sun and then convert it into energy during night follows the CAM cycle or CAM metabolisam. These plants are xerophytic plant.

Difference with C3 and C4 plants-

*In CAM plants carboxylation and decarboxylation is seprated spacially (space vise) as well as temporally (time vise). Where as in C3 and C4 plants these both processes are seprated only spacially, not temporally. These both reaction happen during the day here.

*CAM plant is evolved for conservation of water.

EXPLAINATION:-

In CAM plant carboxylation happen during the night when stomata open. They used starch from chloroplast during carboxylation and convert into malate and store into Vacoule.

During the day, stomata is closed and decarboxylation occurs.during this processes stored malate is get converted into starch in chloroplast in mesophyll cells.
