Where does the oxygen come from that is produced as a by-product of photosynthesis?
Select one:
a. More than one of the other answer options is correct.
b. From the metabolism of carbohydrates.
c. None of the other answer options are correct.
d. From the reduction of CO2.
e. From the Calvin cycle (the light-independent reactions).
f. From the breakdown of water.
Option F ( From the breakdown of water)
Photosynthesis is the process by which chlorophyll-containing plants and other organism uses solar energy, carbon dioxide, water and minerals to produce their food, glucose ( carbohydrates).
Sunlight is captured by green pigments, chlorophyll, provides energy for synthesis of glucose. It also produces high energy electrons in the photosystem that are used in converting ADP and NADP+ into ATP and NADPH. Thus, light energy is converted into chemical energy.
Carbon dioxide used in this process is fixed in the production of glucose.
Water undergoes photolysis to produce electrons, to restore the earlier lost electrons in the photosystem and as a by product releases oxygen, in the atmosphere.
