Which is the most susceptible to degradation? Why?

a. mRNA

b. cDNA

c. gDNA

d. protein

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Answer: a. mRNA

mRNA is most susceptible to degradation because of its structure. While DNA comprises of deoxyribonucleotides which has no 2'hydroxy group, mRNA comprises of ribonucleotides which has a 2' OH(hydroxy) group which weakens the phosphodiester bond and makes a mRNA molecule more susceptible to nucleophilic attack and even self-hydrolysis and aslo digestion by ribonucleases.

cDNA being comprised of deoxyribonucleic acids lack the 2'OH group and is more stable than mRNA. However, cDNA being a single stranded molecule after being reverse transcribed from mRNA is less stable than a gDNA (genomic DNA) molecule which is double stranded.

Proteins are quite stable by their structure as they can form secondary, tertiary and quaternary structures which confer great stability to their structure and make them least susceptible to degradation.
