Stem cells are often in the news because of potential medical use and because of the ethical debate around human embryonic stem cells. From the point of view of biologists, however, stem cells have even wider significance as central players in the development of complex organisms, which include plants. There are surprising similarities between stem cells found in plants and in animals.

Stem cells function as a source of new cells to grow or replace specialised tissues. To perform this function, these cells must divide to renew themselves, while some of their descendants eventually differentiate to build up new tissues. By this definition, stem cells are particularly important for plant growth, because virtually all tissues of the plant descend from small groups of stem cells located in their growing apices, within structures called the apical meristems

A U.S. company has two manufacturing plants, one in the United States and one in another country. Both produce the same item, each for sale in their respective countries. However, their productivity figures are quite different. The analyst thinks this is because the U.S. plant uses more automated equipment for processing while the other plant uses a higher percentage of labor. Explain how that factor can cause productivity figures to be misleading. Is there another way to compare the two...

Four different power plants operated by the same power utility are monitored in terms of their greenhouse gas emissions. The utility has taken 4 samples from the flue gases of each one, during different times of the day, and has measured the dust emission content (mg per m^3 ). The data is provided below. Does the data provide sufficient evidence to indicate a difference in the mean amount of carbon dioxide pollution? Use alpha = 0.05. Power Plant Emissions A...

In animals the sensory capabilities evolved over hundreds of millions of years. It is therefore not surprising that different sensory aspects use similar transduction mechanisms. In terms of transduction (i.e., the way energy or chemicals are sensed and transduced into an electrical signal), which distinct human sensory systems use the same molecular mechanisms? Please list two pairs of systems and explain the similarity. ****Please leave a detailed response. Thank you :)

The drinking water treatment plant is typically upgraded in terms of both water quantity (flow rate) and quality (conversion). At present, 90% of a contaminant A is degraded by a first-order reaction in a single CSTR treating source water. We plan to add an identical reactor having the same volume to the existing one in series in order to improve the performance of current treatment plant. (a) For the same flow rate as presently used, how will this addition affect...

In class we looked at (short run) cost curves. Explain why the marginal cost curve intersects the average total and variable cost curves at their respective minimum values: At what point on the ATC will a perfectly competitive firm always produce in the long run: The supply curve for a perfectly competitive firm is the same as one of the cost curves based on a specific criterion. State both the curve and the criterion:

Ryan has many (over a hundred) houseplants of many different types including philodendrons, ferns, spider plants, cacti, tomatoes, pineapples, etc. Suppose I decided to test the effect of caffeine on the growth rate of plants as follows. First I label each of Ryan's plants with a number. I then record the height of each plant. Then I water all of the indoor plants with only room temperature coffee for a month, and continue watering the outdoor plants with water as...
