Four different types of insecticides are used on strawberry plants. The number of strawberries on each randomly selected plant is given below. Test the hypothesis that the type of insecticide makes no difference in the mean number of strawberries per plant. Use α = 0.01. Insecticide 1 Insecticide 2 Insecticide 3 Insecticide 4 ; The Data: x1(6 5 6 3 7 8) x2(3 5 6 5 2 3) x3(5 5 3 4 7 5) x4(4 5 6 6 3 4) What is χ 2 0 ? What is the p-value? What is the conclusion?

Answer #1

Here we have performed one-way ANOVA, where the hypotheses will be

NULL hypothesis: The means of strawberries are same for each type of insecticide.

ALTERNATIVE hypothesis: All means of strawberries are NOT same for each type of insecticide.

p-value=.303>.01. Hence we do not reject the null hypothesis at 1% level of significance,i.e. we can conclude that the mean number of strawberries are same for each type of insecticides.

WE HAVE PERFORMED ONE_WAY ANOVA IN MINITAB.

One-way ANOVA: strawberry versus insecticide

Source DF SS MS F P
insecticide 3 8.46 2.82 1.30 0.303
Error 20 43.50 2.18
Total 23 51.96

S = 1.475 R-Sq = 16.28% R-Sq(adj) = 3.72%
