Name three potential functions of non-coding DNA, and describe how they work.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The potential functions of non-coding DNA are :

  • They can act as cis/trans regulatory elements. For e.g., enhancers and silencers are regions of DNA that can enhance or silenec gene expression. They can act on nearby or distant genes and can be situated either upstream or downstream of the gene they regulate.
  • Telomeres are repetitive sequences of non-coding DNA that protect chromosomal end deterioration resulted after every round of replication.
  • Certain regions of DNA can function as the Scaffof Attachment Region. These are the sequences of DNA where the nuclear matrix attaches.
