Homework Answers

Answer #1

Since Bacillus thuringiensis crop is a genetically modified crop aimed to provide insect resistance by producing insecticidal toxin, it initially appeared to be safe for human consumption. However there are certain disadvantages are associated with these genetically modified crops. Three of them are given below:

  1. Development of resistance in insects against bacterial toxin: this could happen due to their continuous exposure and thus evolution through selection.
  2. Environmental risk: plant producing toxin may be hazardous to other animal species which in some way will disturb the harmony of the ecosystem exposing them to environmental risks.
  3. Health risk: The consumer is also at the risk of health related problems due to the ingestion of toxin.
