After reading your module on Urinary System, you want to observe what might happen if you drink 2 liters of liquid in 15 minutes. What would be your observation for the next two hours? What are the major mechanisms involved?
When a person drinks too much water it results in hypervolemia
or decreased osmolarity.
The osmoreceptors senses the decrease in osmolarity and increased
blood volume. This causes the hypothalamus to send inhibitory
signals to posterior pituitary causing a decrease in ADH secretion.
This increases the excretion of water in urine.
The atrial natriuretic peptide hormone secreted from heart also
acts on the kidneys to increase water excretion in urine.
This results in increased urine output and frequent urination.
