When there is a decrease in oxygen delivery to the kidneys in certain conditions like anemia , the peritubular interstitial cells detects the low oxygen levels in the blood. The peritubular capillary bed of the renal cortex contains this interstitial cells. The peritubular interstitial cells after detecting low oxygen level in the blood secreted erythropoietin (EPO) into the blood.
Erythropoietin increases the RBC production by 3 ways
1. Promotes the early release of reticulocytes.
2. Promotes pronormoblast production.
3. Shortens the transition time through the normoblast stage .
Thus by increasing the RBC production , erythropoietin increases the oxygen carrying capacity of the blood.
