Question

7. What is a box plot and what does it display?

Answer #1

A Box Plot is the visual representation of the statistical five number summary of a given data set.

A Five Number Summary includes:

- Minimum
- First Quartile
- Median (Second Quartile)
- Third Quartile
- Maximum

It is a graph that gives you a good indication of how the values in the data are spread out. They are useful for identifying outliers and for comparing distributions.

In a box and whisker plot:

- the ends of the box are the upper and lower quartiles, so the box spans the interquartile range
- the median is marked by a vertical line inside the box
- the whiskers are the two lines outside the box that extend to the highest and lowest observations.

Typical Boxplot looks like :

36) A box plot, which is also known as a box-and-whisker plot,
is used to display data. What data does a box plot display? a. the
minimum, the maximum, the lower and upper quartiles, and the median
on a rectangular box aligned either horizontally or vertically b.
the minimum, the maximum, and the mean on a rectangular box aligned
vertically only c. the minimum, the maximum, the range, and the
mean on a rectangular box aligned horizontally only d. the...

1. Which of the following does a box plot not display?
a. The range
b. The interquartile range
c. The lower quartile
d. The mean
2. You have income data for your entire customer database. Some
of your clients are far wealthier than others. Which of the
following do outliers least affect?
a. The range
b. The mean
c. The median
d. The standard deviation

Looking at your box plot does it appear that the data are
concentrated together, spread out evenly, or concentrated in some
areas but not in others ? How can you tell

13. What is the five-number summary and how does it relate to
the box and whisker plot?

A-. Consider the data set
{1,2,4,5,7,8,9,9,10,1,12,11,14,16,17,20,22,23,25,27,35}
Construct a Box Plot.
Upload the document with the box plot.
B-.GPAs at CCSU are normally distributed with a mean of 2.38 and
a standard deviation of 0.45. Find the z-score for a GPA of 3.06.
and discuss the significance of the z-score.

In
MATLAB, Plot the normal distribution, display the equation for the
normal distribution on the graph (see the 1st equation on
Wikipedia), and display the location for the mean and draw a
vertical line at the mean plus and minus one standard deviation.
Pick for the mean 17 and for the standard deviation e. Label the
axes.

(a) Find the five-number summary, and (b) draw a
box-and-whisker plot of the data.
