Navajo Americans are trying to promote multiculturalism or pluralism, describe the race relations. Give 4 examples of each
Pluralism means a society or system of goverment/organization that consists of different groups that keeps their identities safe while in association with other groups or a more dominant group. Pluralism is a model of democracy where different groups can freely express their own opinions & ideas. Many cities in United States have areas where peoples associated with specific groups uphold their cultural traditions. Navajo Nation is the largest native American territory situated in the south western of United states. The people staying in those ares are leading a very hard life not because the area is mostly rural but because majority of homes doesn't have their own addresses. In other words we can safely say that Navajo Nation is living in 'third world' conditions in the middle of the United States. Despite these inequalities Navajo Americans distinguished themselves in the world renowned art & culture. They believe in safeguarding their rich culture & tradition which supports the concept of pluralism. The following instances support these- 1. At present many students prefer to speak in Dine, the language of Navajo native Americans rather than speaking English. In this way Navajo's are trying to preserve their own native language. There is a big reasion behind this, for over a decade due to the compulsion of speaking and learning only English language & not allowing native language in their schools today only few young Navajos can speak the language of their grandparents. There is a growing worry that the Navajos & other native American languages could disappear. So taking the lesson from the past they are promoting their own culture only to survive & preserve for their future generations. 2. In respect of marriage they followed unique system of exogamous in which people can only marry or date partners outside their own clans, including the clans of their four grandparents. Also they have unique culture of breeding cattle for meat & other purposes. 3. I spiritual believes also there are two class of people- earth people & holy people. As earth people they must do everything to the best of their ability to maintain balance between mother earth & man.4. They follows diffferent ceremonies to prevent or cure diseases. Like corn pollen which is used as a blessing and as an offering during prayer. Night chant ceremony is conducted to purify the patient & heal them through prayers to the spirit-beings. This quite an impressive tradition being followed by Navajo Americans.
