In spite of the United States having a long-standing history as being a very youth oriented culture, the reality is that as a nation we are aging. Most of us can expect to live longer than our grandparents, and also healthier. So, let's talk about what you think "getting old. Tell us how you would like to spend the last part of your life- what age do you see yourself reaching? Why? What will you need to do before you reach late adulthood to ensure your ability to age as you wish? What do you think are the most important determinants of "successful" aging? How do you define it? Please be sure to address all three developmental domains in your answer (biological, cognitive and psychosocial). How does culture play a role?
I see myself living to the age of around eighty, and i would like to spend the last days relaxing in my house and having good relationship with my spouse, kids and friends. Also, i would like to involved in leisure activities like writing and walking everyday when i am old. I would like to see myself as financially independent and able to have enough resources to look after myself and my family.
To reach this old age, i need to make sure that i am focussed on my career, and be on track with it. I have to save money so that it will help me after i retire. Drinking and smoking will be avoided at all cost, as it can cause physical health problems later on in my life, and i will develop close relationships with my spouse children and friends. Physical exercise is very important as it will help the body to stay in shape, also i will involve my self in writing and reading pursuits, so that the cognitive health is also intact.
The most important determinants of successful aging are to have good health, have a peace of mind and minimal stress, have good social support and healthy relationships, and also be financially independent.
