Being a social advocate is important in order to empower
clients just beyond providing therapy and for that the first thing
that is needed is to become aware about yourself. In order to
conduct social justice for clients, certain skills like emotional
attunement to oppression and the suffering caused by oppression,
cognitive awareness of the structures that create power imbalances
and oppression, and skills to directly address issues of power,
privilege, and oppression need to be developed in oneself.
Becoming aware of one's societal position and power is also
important to be able to advicate for the client. Training in
multiculturalism is important to become aware various
cultures, races and their problems which would provide a clear
perspective in helping the clients. It will also help to be aware
about cultural differences and advocate the clients without any
bias.
