Answer #1

Let us assume that a researcher works for a company that is in the process of developing some new drug to treat psychological symptoms. The researcher is interested in conducting a study to determine if the drug best improves depressive, anxiety or psychotic symptoms. In this case, the drug is the independent variable and psychological symptoms is the dependent variable. The researcher creates three participant groups, one diagnosed with depression, one diagnosed with anxiety-related disorder and one diagnosed with schizophrenia. The researcher measures the severity of their symptoms before they consume the drug and after they consume the drug for a month. She then compares the differences to check if any improvement has occurred.

A study by the Fellows Research Group evaluated the mental health status of 150 women in the inner city of Philadelphia. The results of the study are in an Excel file in the Week 2 assignment area and in the “Course Resources” area. Load the data set into StatCrunch and perform a one sample t test on the mental health score given that the national average on this test is 45. Is the result significant? Karen wants to study the effect of cardiovascular exercises on first year UTSC students’ resting heart rate. Karen plans to select 2 groups of students, 30 per group. The “exercise” group will partake in group cycling around the campus 3 times a week, for 4 weeks. The other, “ no - exercise ” group, will not. Students’ resting heartrate will be measured in beats per minute, before and after the 4 weeks period . • What is Karen’s population of...

The t statistic compares two groups on one independent variable that has two levels. We can use the t statistic to compare a sample that has a level of an independent variable, or we can use two samples from the same populations and give them two different levels of an independent variable. You will design a two group study with one independent variable for this question. Choose an independent variable that has two levels. The two levels can be 1.)...

Select a peer-reviewed, experimental research study that exemplifies a two-group design and a factorial design (use keywords method, results, and discussion in your Boolean search). These studies can be found using tools such as the GCU Library and Google Scholar. Write a 500-750-word paper in which you: Compare the two research designs. Identify the independent variable(s), dependent variable, and any possible extraneous variable. Identify main effects and interactions for the factorial design. For the t-test alone there are three variants based on the independence of the groups and whether we can assume variances the same or variances between the groups as different. The variances issue is easy as we can always assume they are different as the test is robust to accept any variances but the dependent pairs is different. Why is it different and how might you use it?

A consumer preference study compares the effects of three different bottle designs (A, B, and C) on sales of a popular fabric softener. A completely randomized design is employed. Specifically, 15 supermarkets of equal sales potential are selected, and 5 of these supermarkets are randomly assigned to each bottle design. The number of bottles sold in 24 hours at each supermarket is recorded. The data obtained are displayed in the following table. Bottle Design Study Data A B C 17...
