If a cow wanted to maximize the magnetic flux passing through it's body from the earth's magnetic field, which way should it orient its body?
Magnetic flux is given by-
Where,
B = Magnetic field
A= Area of cross section
= Angle between the directions of magnetic field and normal to the area.
So in order to maximise magnetic flux the cows should position themselves in the direction of the magnetic polea of earth. This gives the direction of the earth's magnetic field.
In some parts of the earth, magnetic poles are aligned in the geometric north-south poles of earth and in some other cases magnetic poles does not coincide with earth's geometric poles.
According to the alignment of earth's magnetic axis in a region, the cows can align their bodies along the direction of the north-magnetic poles to get the maximum flux passage.
