What is a transformer? Explain how a transformer works including specific details on step up and step down transformers.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

a transformer is a voltage regulating device. it is based on the principal of mututal inductance.

it consist of iron core with wire wounded upon it. one is known as primary coil and the other is secondary coil, transfor,er is of 2 types

step up transformer and

step down transformer.

it is used for regulating voltages produced from a c source. primary coil links magnetioc flux wich gets multiplied with the number of turns in the coils. a step up consists of turns ,mroe than that of primary coil, hence more flux which will produce more voltage across the output

. a step down transformeer will do the reverse.

A power plant outputs power at 4000vots and 100amps. It then goes through a step-up transformer to 2.5x10^5volts. The resistance of the high tension lines is 30ohms. Use the fact that power input = power output on a transformer, P=IV=IV to find the secondary current, then work power through 30ohm transmission line. a. What is the percentage power loss in the lines? b. If there was no step-up transformer, what would be the percentage power loss?
