At the terminal of the electricity generation plant, and the consumer, which type among step-up, and step-down transformers are used?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

A step up transformer used to increase the voltage and to reduce the current.

A step down transformer used to reduce the voltage and to increase the current. In both the case Power remains same as P=VI

At power generation stations Step up transformers are used to reduce the power losses caused by distribution lines.

At consumer level step down transformers are used to increase current for consumer demand. Higher voltages are dangerous, so at consumer level volatage is reduced to safer level.

Our power plant generates electricity using a steam turbine. At the exit from our power generation process, we end up with  978.0 kg/s of liquid water at  323.0 K. We cannot release this water directly into a nearby river if the temperature is over  305.00 K, without causing significant thermal pollution that would damage fish populations. Our plan is to mix this warm water with another cooler water stream at  282.00 K. What is the mass flow rate of this cool water stream needed...

A power plant outputs power at 4000vots and 100amps. It then goes through a step-up transformer to 2.5x10^5volts. The resistance of the high tension lines is 30ohms. Use the fact that power input = power output on a transformer, P=IV=IV to find the secondary current, then work power through 30ohm transmission line. a. What is the percentage power loss in the lines? b. If there was no step-up transformer, what would be the percentage power loss?
