Imagine an ideal transformer with 1.5 A of peak input current and 9.0 A of peak output current. (a) Is this transformer step-up or step-down? (b) What is the required peak input voltage if the transformer is designed for 18 W of power? Show all work.

Answer #1

(a) The input power and the output power of an ideal transformer remains constant. Hence if output current increases then the output voltage will decrease. From the question we can see that the output peak current is higer than the input current, hence we can say that the output voltage is lesser than input voltage. Therefore the transformer is a step down transformer.

(b) The power is given by the equation,

Subsitutting values we can write,

Therefore the peak input voltage is 12 V.
