A step-up transformer has a primary coil with 100 loops and a secondary coil with 800 loops. If the primary coil is supplied with a household current of 120V and 12 A,

(a) what voltage is produced in the secondary circuit?

? V

(b) what current flows in the secondary circuit?

? A

Homework Answers

Answer #2

Solution:-

  1. Calculate voltage produced in the secondary circuit

If the voltage in the primary is 120v.then the voltage in the secondary is ‘stepped up’ by a factor of, 800/100 or 8

So secondary voltage is, 120v * 8 = 960 V (volt)

The voltage produced in secondary Circuit is 960 V

  1. Calculate current flows in the secondary circuit

Conversely the current in the secondary is steeped down by a factor of 8 this gives a secondary current of

12 A / 8 = 1.5 A (ampere)

The current flows in secondary Circuit is 1.5 A
