Indicate if a pn junction can be obtained: a) by adding indium to germanium; (b) by adding aluminum to the vessel. Justify your answers.

Answer #1

A) Acceptor impurity atoms like indium have fewer valence electrons than the atoms they replace in the intrinsic semiconductor lattice. They accept electrons from the semiconductor's valence band. This provides excess holes to the intrinsic semiconductor. Excess holes increase the hole carrier concentration of the semiconductor creating a p-type semiconductor.

B) To make a p-type semiconductor extra materials like boron or aluminium are added to the silicon. These materials have only three electrons in their outer shell. When the extra material replaces some of the silicon it leaves a 'hole' where the fourth electron would have been if the semiconductor was pure silicon.

a. What is the pH of a solution obtained from adding 184 ml 0.57 M NaOH to 42 mL 0.43 M Phosphoric acid, H3PO4? b.Al(OH)3is an amphoteric hydroxide This means it can partially neutralize both acid and base. If aluminum hydroxide is added to a basic solution with a pH of 9.01, what is the new pH after equilibrium is established? There are two equations to consider, but only one is useful for the calculation: Al(OH)3(s) ? Al3+(aq) + 3OH-(aq)...

2. Light emitting diodes Technology companies combine the three elements indium, gallium and nitrogen in the correct ratio to make InGaN crystals. InGaN is found inside blue light emitting diodes (LEDs). The figure above shows a small sample of InGaN crystals. The crystals needed for red LEDs are produced by combining aluminum, gallium and arsenide. InGaN and AlGaAs are both semiconductors. In a semiconductor, there are many low- lying energy levels for electrons to occupy. There are also high-lying energy...
