What are the major effects encountered by an electron traversing matter?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Solution

Electron like any charged particle can interact with matter via various methods and lose their energy. Collision is the main type interaction they undergo, Some other possibilities are also listed below,

  • INELASTIC COLLISIONS WITH ATOMIC ELECTRONS

This process leads to energy loss of charged particles

  • ELASTIC SCATTERING FROM NUCLEI.

This effect leads to a deflection of the charged particle from its incident direction.

  • EMISSION OF CHERENKOV RADIATION.

If the particle velocity is larger than the speed of light inside the material Cherenkov radiation is emitted. The energy loss due to emission of Cherenkov photons is small compared to the energy loss induced by inelastic collisions with atomic electrons.

  • BREMSSTRAHLUNG

Light charged particles as electrons and positrons also loose energy by emission of Bremsstrahlung photons in the electric field of a nucleus.

#1 There are two classes of explanations for the two major observations concerning Dark Matter. The first class explains Dark Matter as some heretofore unknown massive stuff that we have not been able to detect prior to these observations. The second class of explanations suggests that the current theory of gravity is not true at the scale of galaxies, opening the way for an alternative theory of gravity (Modified Newtonian Dynamics or MOND). In your textbook there is a section...

Positronium is an exotic form of matter formed by an electron and a positron (a positively charged electron) orbiting around a common center at a distance of 1.06 D (from each other, not from the center). We will assume that the system rotates in a way approximated by the rigidrotor model. Calculate the following: A. The first four energy levels associated to the rotation (in three dimensions) for this system. B. The first four possible values of the angular momentum...
