Answer #1

If you just take a positron and an electron, they attract each other because they've got opposite electrical charges. But a much more interesting question is if you make a matter atom and an antimatter atom, do they then attract each other? Because if they were two atoms, they would have a positive pull together from gravity. So an interesting question which I think Jeffrey might like to comment on is whether there's some anti-gravitational force related to antimatter...

science fiction stories have included spaceships that use the annihilation of matter and antimatter to produce energy. How much matter and antimatter would be required to launch 15000kg spaceship from earths orbit out of the solar system? ignore the energy necessary to escape earths gravity, and assume equal amounts of matter and antimatter.

Antihydrogen is the only antimatter element that has been produced in the laboratory, albeit just a few atoms at a time. Each antihydrogen atom consists of a positron in orbit around an antiproton and has the same atomic mass as hydrogen. If an antihydrogen atom collides with a hydrogen atom, they annihilate each other and create gamma radiation. Part A What minimum amount of energy is released in this process? Part B If this energy could be harnessed in a...

Suppose the difference between matter and antimatter in the early universe were 1 part in 108 instead of 1 part in 109. (a.) Evaluate the temperature at which deuterium begins to form. (b.) At what age does this occur? (c.) Evaluate the temperature and the corresponding time of radiation decoupling (when hydrogen atoms form).

Two identically shaped conducting spheres, fixed in place, attract each other with a force of 1.296 N when separated by 50 cm. The spheres are connected by a thin wire and then the wire is removed. The speheres then repel each other with a force of 0.729 N. What were the initial charges of the spheres.
