Motivation refers to the energy or the force that stimulates a person to work towards fulfilling a certain set or desired goal.

Explanation:

The process of motivation involves various fundamental phases, the first phase is the need identification and this is the phase where the employee feels a certain need that is unsatisfied and therefore identifies the need. The second phase is exploring ways to fulfill the need and this is the phase where different alternative ways are explored in order to satisfy the unsatisfied need which was identified during the first phase. The third phase is selecting goals and this is where the goals are selected on the basis of identifying needs and also alternative courses of action. The fourth phase involves the performance of the employee and this is where the identified need stimulates the employee to perform in a way that they have already considered which means that they perform certain courses of action in order to satisfy the unsatisfied need. The fifth phase involves reward and punishment as a consequence of performance, in this phase if the consequence of a particular course of action taken by the employee are in the form of rewards, then the employee will be motivated to perform the same level of action in order to obtain similar rewards in the future.

Managers today can apply various strategies in order to help employees suffering from work stress, one of the ways that managers can do this is by setting clear goals for their employees, setting clear goals means that employees will not have to think about what they are supposed to accomplish, they will rather have the ability to focus on the set clear goals and put effort in order to achieve them. The other strategy is by offering a flexible working environment, this means that managers have to allow their employees flexibility by not monitoring them often as long as their work is completed by specific deadlines. The manager should also create a conducive working environment such as offering what employees need to achieve their goals, ensure that there is a proper communication channel between managers and the employees. This will make it possible for employees to speak up anything that they are uncomfortable of and thus help in reducing workplace stress.
