A lot of paper is wasted, for instance, on print jobs that no one claims. In my work, a lot of paper is wasted in taking prints of study material to the students. There are several departments in the college and each department has several courses. For each course, the professor has to provide study material to the students. In this regard, the professors send their study material to the print section to take printouts of the study material for every student and distribute them in the class. The college has more than 1000 students studying in various courses and distributing printed study materials to everybody results in enormous paper waste. Every student does a project work and submits their project report in bundles of many copies to the project guide. Hence the use of paper in the organization is enormous on a daily basis. In this regard, I write this proposal to reduce paper usage in our organization.
According to WWF statistics, nearly 1 million tonnes of paper is used on a daily basis across the world. This puts unnecessary pressure on the environment and cutting of trees. The impact of paper and pulp industry on the global forests is enormous ranging from newspapers, office use, company use, glossy paper, tissue paper and packaging. Packaging alone accounts for 40% of all paper use and the U.S is still the largest consumer of paper in the world. WWF states that through paper reduction techniques and tips, paper usage can be reduced by 20% annually in most of the offices.
I propose to the management to convert our organization into a paperless organization. Initially, the paper use must be limited and then totally shift to a paperless office. This is the era of smartphones and digital content. I recommend distributing study material in a digital format to the students and conducting exams in an online manner to reduce the usage of paper. I recommend submitting and storing the project work in a digital format and avoiding the printed documents storage for future reference. I also suggest storing the office files in a digital manner. Technology must be used in the form of email, voice mail and intranet for internal communication in the organization. Paper reuse must be encouraged in the organization. I strongly recommend adopting a “Go Green” concept in the organization to reduce or eliminate the paper use and contribute to a safer and greener environment. It is up to us to save the forests by limiting our paper usage and transforming into a paperless organization. I hope that the management of the organization considers my proposal to change to a greener environment and contribute to the global society as a whole.
