The method of MORT was developed by the US scientist named William Johnson with help from the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission. It is an analytical tool which comprehensively evaluates the causes and therefore helps to understand the root cause of major incidents. Some of its advantages are:-

• It is effective in identifying underlying management RC of hazards.
• Helps in predicting the level of adequacy of elements already in place in preventing accidents
• Provides a systematic method of evaluating an incident in the form of a framework

The disadvantages include complexity and the amount of time required for the evaluation process to be completed.

It can be used for evaluating the preparedness of nuclear power plants and ensure safety as it helps in predicting the level of adequacy of the control measure.
