Setting goals is a crucial aspect of any work in the organization.
Setting goals for the work will provide directions to the job, and helps to make the employees disciplined and dedicated towards their work as they have a goal to achieve.
Setting goals can also help motivate the employees, but setting specific and challenging targets can have adverse effects for the organization and employees.
Goals require to have flexibility within them because the environment is dynamic and their upcoming challenges for the organizations and employees.
Being too specific for the organization would be very disastrous because the business organization's environment is dynamic. The situation keeps changing, and there are chances that the circumstances when the management set up those goals for the organization are different from the conditions while working for those goals.
As a result, the employees and organization will fail to achieve those 'too specific' goals.
Not achieving the goals will negatively impact the employees' self-esteem and motivation, and they might start feeling low.
Not being able to achieve goals can also be disastrous for the organization's reputation and can affect its brand image adversely.
Having challenging goals can also negatively impact the employees' self-esteem if they are unable to achieve them.
Challenging goals are essential for the organization's growth and development and the employees working under it because it helps them learn new and come out of their comfort zone, which would help them develop themselves.
On the other hand, those challenging goals should also be within a limit after assessing the employees' skills and knowledge accurately. If the goals are too challenging, it would have negative impacts.
Employees would start feeling that they lack the required skills and knowledge the organization needs, and it may mentally impact their self-esteem and confidence, which would affect their productivity and efficiency.
Thus, the organization requires to set up goals while adequately assessing the skills and requirements, and there is a need for including some flexibility in target, and should not be too specific.
