The stakeholder in a project are the influence group of people who gets affected by changes due to project or can influence how the projects should move forward. Hence it is very important to identify the stake holders and engage with them effectively so that the project does not delay, become off track or even end abruptly due to the influence of the stakeholders expectations not met or not properly captured.

For a project manager, stakeholder management is one of the prime task which needs to be addressed properly so that the stakeholders do not compel you to put your efforts in multiple directions which puts off the attention of the project manager from the main task or scope of the project.
