What are the possible outcomes of failure to reach consensus on a collective bargaining agreement?

Answer #1

When the two parties are unable to reach consensus on the collective bargaining agreement, this is called a bargaining impasse. Bargaining impasse leads to many kinds of strikes.

An economic strike occurs when the employees are unhappy about the economic conditions during contract negotiations. For example, 45,000 Verizon workers rallied in the summer of 2011 when contract negotiations failed.

An unfair labor practices strike can also happen during negotiations. An unfair labor practices strike may occur due to unfair labour practices experienced in the company. A bargaining impasse could also lead to lockout. Lockout prevents workers from working until they accept the contract.
