A 93-year-old man comes into the office with his daughter. She says he has urinary frequency. He seems a little confused and the daughter keeps trying to manipulate the conversation when the administrative medical assistant is attempting to talk to him. Role-play the communication between the administrative medical assistant, the older adult, and the daughter.
Directions: Write the dialog between the patient (the elderly male), his daughter, and the administrative medical assistant in complete descriptive sentences in paragraph form using the concepts below.
1. Approach the patient in a friendly manner and look directly at him while speaking; do not prejudge.
2. Speak clearly and slowly; offer simple explanations.
3. Form short sentences and ask brief questions.
4. Analyze communication and encourage responses and feedback.
5. Rephrase statements or questions as necessary.
6. React calmly if or when the patient seemed confused or forgetful.
7. Do not make excuses for the patient.
8. Tell the patient when you did not understand him; ask the patient to repeat what was said.
9. Be gentle but honest and truthful when communicating; do not mislead the patient.
10. Offer written instructions.

AMA- I very well understand ma'am. But could he specify the problems.
P- i am not feeling good

D- He is having issues with his urination.
AMA - Could you tell what time of problems
P- I have frequent urination
AMA- How many times a day.
D- 7-8times a day
AMA- All right mam. Sir so you urinate 7-8 times a day.
P- no it is more than that. I go atleast 15 times a day
D- oh I did not know that
AMA- how much is the urine amount.
P- It is very less in amount and very frequent
AMA- do you have any other problems?
D- tell her about as if you feel the urine not coming out completely
P- Oh yes. I feel as if my bladder is not emptying completely
AMA- Sir. You have increased urinary frequency due to incomplete emptying of the bladder.
D- should we be worried for this
AMA- it is fairly common at his age. It may be due to an obstruction in his urine outflow due to enlarged prostate.
We will perform a few investigations to evaluate it.
P- do I need to get admitted
AMA- no nothing as such for now. The physician will examine you further.
D- thank you so much for your help
AMA- You are welcome
