Role playing exercise/Scenario-

Mr. Osborn, a 60 year old man, comes into the office with a large hearing device on his right ear. He is there for a physical examination, and it has been several years since his last appointment. You are responsible for obtaining a new history form and updating his registration information. Role-play the communication between the Administrative Medical Assistant and the patient.

Directions: Write the complete dialog between the patient (the elderly male) and the administrative medical assistant in complete descriptive sentences in paragraph form using the concepts below. Factors to include in your scenario:

1. Select a quiet place to communicate, and give the patient your complete attention.

2. Eliminate distractions or background noises.

3. Choose good seating arrangement, sitting on the side of the patient's good ear.

4. Face the patient in an area of good lighting.

5. Touch the patient lightly, as necessary, to gain his attention.

6. Speak in a natural tone, slowly, and distinctly, enunciate clearly, and use a low pitched voice.

7. Use short, simple sentences and repeat or rephrase as necessary.

8. Use gestures as needed.

9. Write down words or phrases that you have difficulty communicating.

10. Practice active listening techniques and get feedback by asking questions to verify understanding.
