Your classmate comments,
“That compassion stuff is stupid. It’s all I can do to complete the assignment. I don’t have time to go around feeling love for my patients”. How would you respond?
I would try to make my friend understand the need of compassion inorder to exercise his/her duties as a nurse. It is a trait that enables a nurse to understand the feelings and needs of the patient and to act accordingly, thereby creating a respectful relationship.
Rather than just showing off compassion for the mere sake of grades and marks,I would ask him/her to notice the outcomes and patient safisfaction that can be achieved by simple acts such as greeting a patient wholeheartedly or paying attention to their problems.I can even cite examples of situations where I have been compassionate and the kind of difference it bought about in someone's life.
To conclude,my ultimate aim would be to inculcate a sense of compassion in my colleague,so that his/her words and acts will be soothing for a patient who is about to face a chronic disease or a frightening surgery!!
