Anxiolytic drugs or anti-anxiety drugs are the groups of drugs used to prevent anxiety-related disorders. It slows down the activity of the brain and often combined with cognitive behavioural therapy to get faster and best results. Benzodiazepines are a good example of anxiolytic drugs. It is mainly used to treat sleeping disorders and social anxiety disorder.

Advantages

1. Anxiolytic drugs are sedatives that help to relax muscles and calm down the mind.

2. Faster in action.

3. Relatively safe in overdose.

4. Useful sedative for surgery.

Disadvantages

1. Recommended for short-term only because it can be addictive or habit-forming.

2. Withdrawal symptoms can be dangerous.

3. Long term use can affect the normal activities of the brain.

4. Side effects such as weight gain, dizziness, nausea, increase in blood pressure etc.
