Nursing : Art & Science

Nursing can be described as both an art and a science; a heart and a mind. At its heart, lies a fundamental respect for human dignity and an intuition for a patient’s needs. This is supported by the mind, in the form of rigorous core learning. The practice of nursing involves working with individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations. ANA defines nursing as " a caring-based practice in which processes of diagnosis and treatment are applied to human experiences of health and illness" (ANA, 1994).Nursing practice consist of Restorative , Supportive and Promotive aspects.

Nursing is much more than a career. It takes a special kind    of compassionate personality, calm head, and intestinal fortitude to care for people in their times of need. More over the nursing syllabus itself goes through variety of subjects like sociology , psychiatry, child health care , obstetrics ,etc and nursing care mainly focus on a holistic approach . That helps a nurse to recognize that a patient is more than just their illness. Holistic nursing is the practice of "healing the whole person”.. It is based on the principle that a patient's biological, social, psychological and spiritual aspects are interconnected. These aspects fit together to form a unique person. Thus, holistic nursing focuses on individualized care by understanding each patient's diverse needs. So working as a nurse will change views in the care of persons either sick or well,  and it helps the nurse to view a person as a human being rather than that as a patient.

By far, the number one quality of a good nurse is caring,” It says that ,” If you do not care about others and yourself, you cannot be compassionate and provide quality care to others. Caring and nursing are so intertwined that nursing would not be nursing without the act of caring. Caring is “a feeling and exhibiting concern and empathy for others; showing or having compassion” . Caring is a feeling that also requires an action.   Care and love are the most universal, the most tremendous, and the most mysterious of cosmic forces: they comprise the primal and universal psychic energy. And Caring is the essence of nursing and the most central and unifying focus for nursing practice so simply we can say that Without caring…not a nurse” and “even if no one else cares, nurses do.”
