INCIVILITY

The word "incivility" is derived from a Latin word incivility meaning is "not of a citizen". Incivility is term used social behavior lacking in civility or good manner like lack of respect for elders, threatening behaviour etc. Civil behaviour requires respect and responsibility but in incivil behaviour occurs when people fail to do that.

EXAMPLE OF INCIVILITY

By a student:

Disrespect for the standards of classroom behaviour as posted in the syllabus like late arrival in the class, sleeping during class etc.

By a professor

Loudly having a private discussion in front of the group of students, using vulgar language towards students are not good a code on conduct of professor

how would you manage a situation in which one of your peers in class was talking and laughing during a professor
lecture?

Incivility is a threat in this modern society and into the classrooms and campuses of colleges. It can leads to improper behaviour or insulting other people etc. However, incivility exists in classrooms where professors experience disrespect in different forms. So civility should be requirement for the colleges to maintain the respect and courtesy among students and teachers.

As a friend I will try to make him/her to understand the following thing like;

  • Civility in the classroom is important subject to a pleasant environment for the students to grow.
  • Immaturity from the school can drag into the college and cause bigger problems.
  • College and classroom are a place for us to grow educationally not a place to disturb by those people who bring interruption.
  • Make him/her to remember that compromise can create a more civil relationship.
  • Make him/her to understand that they are paying for college, so listen the class carefully to obtain the desired college degree.
  • Making him/her to remember about the option of leaving the class whenever they please.
  • Make them to understand that professors should be treated with respect just as any educator feel they deserve to be treated as.
  • Make them to feel that, the relationship between the professor and student should be used towards promotion of civility in the classroom.
  • Make them to remember about the penalties and punishments if they are disturbing the lectures of professors.
  • Finally, if they are not giving the ear to my words, either i will change the sitting position or i will inform the concerned authority about the issue to take action.
