Mech. Engineering - Materials

1. Describe how dislocations can be generated in a crystal lattice (Frank-Read source).

Homework Answers

Answer #2

Dislocation or crystal defects are the irregularities within crystal structure in which either parent atoms escapes from crystal lattice or it kept place within the lattice other than its original position.

Hence there are two types of dislocation in crystal.First in which atoms escapes from its position eg. Schottky defects in which cation with anion escapes from crystal lattice.

Second one is dislocation in which atoms keep position within crystal lattice other'than its original position.eg. Frankal defects .

How to use Crystal Ball (Oracle - Excel) simulation to answer the question? "A manufacturing firm has set up a project for developing a new machine for one of its production lines. The most likely estimated cost of the project itself is $1 million, but the most optimistic estimate is $900,000 while the pessimists predict a project cost of $1,200,000. The real problem is that even if the project costs are within those limits, if the project itself plus its...

When given NPV, I have trouble understanding how IRR functions. I read some materials online, it mentioned that the IRR (which is the discount rate) that makes NPV goes 0. Hence, for example: Year 0 1 2 3 4 Present Value (900) 247.72 282.78 366.06 17.77 NPV = 9.32 I understand we can use IRR function in excel, however, when I want to do it in an trial end error method, what formula should I insert my "guess" rate? Kindly...
