Answer #1

Steam nozzle: It is a duct or passage like device of varying cross-section, through which heat energy of steam is converted to kinetic energy. Steam Nozzle major function is to produce steam jet with high velocity to drive steam turbines.

Types of steam nozzle used in power plant are:

  1. Convergent nozzle
  2. Divergent nozzle
  3. Convergent-Divergent nozzle

1. Convergent nozzle:

It is type of nozzle of which crossectional area decreases continuously from its entrance to exit.

Applications: it is used in cases like where the back pressure is equal to or greater than critical pressure ratio.

2.Divergent nozzle:

In this type of nozzle crossectional area increases continously from its entrance to exit.

Application: it is used where back pressure is less than critical pressure ratio.

3.Convergent-Divergent nozzle:

In this type of nozzle first decrease from its entrance to throat and then increases from throat to exit.

Application: used widely in many type of steam turbine.

Major applications of steam turbine are as follows:

  • Spray painting
  • Rocket motors
  • Jet engines
  • Steam and gas turbine
  • Steam jet refrigeration system etc

Advantages of Divergent nozzle is to increase the pressure and thus produce high thrust like rocket propulsion engine or jet engine.

Advantage of Convergent nozzle are used to increase fluid velocity thus converts most of the fluid energy to kinetic energy. These are used to run turbine blade in impact turbine electric generators.

Disadvantages of convergent nozzle are:

  • It has no Divergent outlet and hence low pressure recovery.
  • It can't be used in low pressure head.
  • It cant be used in flow meter if fluid has high percentages of solid particles.

Advantage of Convergent-Divergent nozzle are

  • These can be seen in water supply pumps ,jet engines where thrust at high speed like supersonic jet is required

Disadvantage of Convergent-Divergent steam nozzle is that it creat shock wave due to increase in velocity to sonic speed.

The condenser of a large steam power plant is a heat exchanger in which steam is condensed to liquid water. Assume the condenser to be a parallel flow shell-and-tube heat exchanger consisting of a single shell and 10,000 tubes, each executing two passes. The tubes are of thin wall construction with D = 30 mm and the steam condenses on their outer surface. The heat transfer rate that must be effected by the exchanger is Q = 2 × 10^9...

A steam power plant operates on the simple ideal rankine cycle between the pressure limits of 50 kPa and 20 MPa, with a turbine inlet temperature of 600 Degree C. Disregarding the pump work, then: (a) Show the T-S diagram of the entire cycle. (b) Solve the total heat (kJ/kg) input for the cycle. (c) Solve the total heat (kJ/kg) reject by the cycle. (d) Solve the thermal efficiency of this plant.

1. You are to do a preliminary design study for a small demonstration steam turbine power plant. - Steam will be provided by a small steam generator fired by natural gas.   - Your system will take in steam at 30 bar and 400 oC. - The steam passes through a two stage turbine. At a pressure of 10 bars, the steam leaves the first stage of the turbine and will pass through a reheat loop in the steam generator which...

Consider a 1 MW power plant (this is the useful output in the form of electric energy) that operates between 30∘C and 450∘C at 65% of the Carnot efficiency. This is enough electric energy for about 750 homes. One way to use energy more efficiently would be to use the 30∘C "waste" energy to heat the homes rather than releasing that heat energy into the environment. This is called cogeneration, and it is used in some parts of Europe but...
