Main goal was to preserve United States by preserving the union , which would lead to unity between the south and the north. Union were the citizens of the United States,which would be able to make the government intact.

Nothern part wanted preserving the union , but tht southern wanted to keep the slavery to preserve it and not end it. Thatswhy the civil war started. Where Abraham Lincoln was against the slavery. And this war led to end of slavery in the United States and were 13th amendment was passed.
