Drawing on accounts given in class and class handouts, as well as the Todaro–Smith textbook, explain how the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) reflect the influence of Amartya Sen’s capabilities theory. Are there aspects of development that Sen emphasizes which are not addressed in the MDGs and SDGs? Be specific.
Amartya Sen's capability theory emphasizes that poverty deprivation in an economy can be removed by overall development of the society and not by concentrating only on economic growth or increasing Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of a nation. Thus, a nation should aim for overall development of a society by improving educational standards, health standards, reducing income inequality within a nation etc. Thus, bottoms up approach of economic development should be followed by a nation by concentrating on overall development of a nation rather than following top down approach which focuses only on increasing national income of a nation.
All the aspects of development that sen emphasizes are together covered in the MDGs and SDGs which emphasizes on overall development of a nation.
