why does tocqueville thinks american slavery differs?
Tocqueville thinks American slavery in urban areas was different. In the South, where slavery existed, not much trouble is taken to keep the Negro apart. At certain times they share the labors and the pleasures of the white men. The people were willing to mix with them to a certain extent. Although legislation is harsher against them, however customs are more gentle and tolerant. Thus it is in the United States that the prejudice that repels the Negroes seems to rise in proportion because we emancipated, and inequality sanctioned by the manners although it is effaced from the laws of the country.
