I do not believe that a lack of Skeuomorphism has kept windows 8 from being popular. Personally, I find the interface to just be far less convenient than others that makes it so less desirable. Plenty of other apps and games that use a lack of skeuomorphism such as Snapchat or Instagram are still incredibly popular without it. I find that sometimes skeuomorphism can be very annoying, as it feels at times belittling to the user. Alongside, the design being sometimes very distracting. I often find myself staring at an app that is 3D especially when others aren't, and for someone like me who has a very hard time concentrating on one thing at a time. While it can be incredibly useful to others who aren't very familiar to technology or how to work whatever application it overall is not completely necessary. Users can find and learn where to put unneeded folders and documents without 3D identification. On the plus side skeuomorphism can loo very attractive in design and can be very comfortable to see. As in being so well known there isn't any confusion about what an application does. But in the end I have no strong opinion on it either way. Both pros and cons cross each other out evenly I find.
I believe that presence of Skeumorphism can make certain apps more popular to the users who can very well get attracted to the attractive designs and pattern looks pleasant to the eyes of the beholder. Although functionality wise lack of skeumorphism does not affect much for some of the apps but some users often like to use the apps which is bright, beautifully designed like the kids who play cetain game apps and become excited to play up with that by installing it only because of the skeumorphism feature plus which tempts them to go for it although they are not so much aware of the functionality that the game possess. Apps that lack skeumorphism are also used but they are not so much installed like the ones which contains skeumorphism.
