Extension point:

  • An extension point is a formal declaration in a plugin. xml file where customization is allowed. Customization takes the place of other plug-ins (inclusive) providing a little chunk of XML describing the specific customization that is requested.

Variation point:

  • Specific location at a process where situational factors are evaluated and changes to the standard process are applied.
  • A point in a model (or other artifact) where a choice needs to be made between multiple possible variants. This choice is made during the configuration of the model.
