What is the average velocity of the neon atoms in the gas phase at 25 degrees celsius.

The answer should be 607 m/s but I cannot seem to get that. Please show work and formulas!

Answer #1

Average velocity ,

Where

R = gas constant = 8.314 J / (mol-K)

T = temperature = 25 oC = 25+273 = 298 K

M = Molar mass of Ne = 20.2 g/mol

                                  = 20.2x10-3 kg /mol

Plug the values we get

    = 559 m/s

Therefore the average velocity of Neon atoms , v = 559 m/s

Laser Cooling of Atoms: In the simplest versions of laser cooling, a gas of atoms can be cooled from room temperature (?300 K) to about 1 × 10-4 K through the absorption of light. The absorbed light transfers momentum to the atoms, thereby slowing down those atoms that are moving in the direction of the incoming laser beam. The following questions refer to a gas of rubidium atoms. (a) The average speed of atoms in the gas phase is directly...
