How is grading used for storm drainage control?

Answer #1

Generally grading is used for drainage purpose in paved areas as unpave areas are bare and water can easily infiltrate to through the soil and joins the sub surface water table but it is not the case with paved areas.

Paved areas are mostly impermeable areas and if they are constructed flat then storm water will get accumulate over there and remain for longer duration untill it gets evaporated as infiltration can not occur there significantly.

So these paved areas are graded by providing little slope with respect to the horizontal so that accumulated water gets energy due to gravity and flow away and are joined to lower elevation with either a storm sewer, drainage basin or gutters etc. Where it gets collected and drained away to the desired destination from there.

This grading is very essential in the management of storm drainage control.

A 150-acre rural drainage area consists of three different watershed areas as follows: Steep grassed areas = 20 percent Forested areas = 30 percent Cultivated = 50 percent If the time of concentration for the drainage area is 30 minutes, determine the peak runoff rate (by the rational method) for a storm of 25 yr frequency. Assume that the rainfall intensity curves in the text are applicable to this drainage area.

say that, during a storm, you can estimate how far away the storm is by counting the number seconds between lightening and thunder, and that every second represents another mile away. 1- The speed of light is approximately 2.98*10^8 m/s . Rewrite this (scientific notation) as a regular number (not scientific notation). 2- There are 1,609 meters in a mile. If the storm is one mile away, how long will it take for the light from the lightening to reach...
