What is the importance of concrete removal behind the corroded reinforcement?
Solution:
Concrete, generally upto a depth of 20 to 30 mm (depending on the intensity of contaminated concrete) , behind the concrete reinforcement is removed to fully expose the corroded reinforcement and separate the contaminated concrete with the corroded reinforcement. After the removal of the concrete , the corroded reinforcement is either treated to improve its strength or it is replaced by another steel specimen that will provide the same strength as the initially provided reinforcement. After replacing the steel , the contaminated concrete is also replaced with fresh concrete mortars.
The main aim to carry out this process is to fully recover the strength ( strength of the structure) lost due to corrosion of the reinforcement.
