Explain the mechanics behind a split tension test for concrete. How is tension

produced in the concrete by applying a compression load?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Tensile strength is determined by briquette test also called split tensile test. This test was formerly used to have an indirect indication of compressive strength of concrete. In this the load( compressive load) is applied along the vertical diameter which tends to splits the concrete block along the longitudinal axis ,same as in case of tensile failure. The reason for this type of testing is that it is impossible to apply direct tensile load along the axis and secondly there will always some eccentricity present

Load is applied steadily and uniformly starting from zero and increasing at the rate of 0.7N/ mm2 in 12 seconds

Q3: Tension test was conducted on a mild steel rod having diameter 1.5 cm and length 20 cm. While applying a load of 10 kN, there will be an extension of 0.012 cm on a length of 20 cm. Maximum load carried by the rod was found to be 26 kN and the load beyond which stress is not proportional to strain was observed to be 11 kN. When the specimen breaks, the extension of the rod for 20 cm...

Explain how a child develops understanding of conservation moving from Piaget’s Preoperational to his Concrete Operational Stage. Make sure to fully explain conservation in your answer. Also, make sure to provide an example of how the child does not understand this concept in the Preoperational Stage but does understand this concept during the Concrete Operational Stage.

Explain why depression is a hypothetical construct instead of a concrete variable. Describe how depression might be measured and defined using an operational definition. TIP: The more details you provide for the operational definition the better your mark. It should be your OWN definition not a psychological test used already. Doing some research on what are clinical indicators for depression will help you better answer this question.
