What are the differences between negative reinforcement and punishment?
Negative reinforcement takes place when we remove a certain stimulus (usually an aversive stimulus) after a particular behavior is exhibited. This is intended to increase the likelihood of the particular behavior occurring again in the future. For example; Sarah does the dishes (behavior) in order to stop her mother’s nagging (aversive stimulus).
However, in punishment, the intention is of decreasing the intended behavior. For example; when a child cheats in the class test (behavior) the teacher reprimands him (aversive stimulus) in front of his classmates
