When a solution is heated, do all of the molecules attain the same kinetic energy, or do they have different kinetic energies? If they have different kinetic energies, why is that so?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

When a solution is heated, all of the molecules will not attain the same kinetic energy ( they have different kinetic energies) because each and every molecule will have different rate of motion in different directions with different rate of collision and all these collisions are inelastic collisions.(elastic collision means there is no net loss in kinetic energy in the system as a result of the collision).

But generally we can calculate the average kinetic energy only. It is difficult to calculate the individual molecule kinetic energy. So, each and every molecule will have different kinetic energy but their average kinetic energy is only measurable.

The average kinetic energy of the molecules in a gas sample depends only on the temperature, T. However, given the same kinetic energies, a lighter molecule will move faster than a heavier molecule, as shown in the equation for rms speed rms speed=√3RTM where R=8.314 J/(mol⋅K) and M is molar mass in kilograms per mole. The maximum kinetic energy of the emitted electrons is found to be 1.255 eV when a metal surface is illuminated by light with a wavelength of 400 nm.
