Question

Which deformations characterize polymer materials?

Which deformations characterize polymer materials?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The mechanical properties of polymers are influenced by hardness, fatigue resistance , elongation and impact stength.

Mechanical properties of polymers can be infleuced by temperature. a polymer can change from brittle behavior at low temperatures to a rubber-like behavior at high temperature.

es. Highly crystalline polymers like polypropylenr behave in a brittle manner, whereas amorphous polymers like poystyrene can exhibit plastic deformation

In case of cross-linked polymers, recoverable deformations up to very high strains / point of rupture are also possible

Consider two imaginary polymers. Polymer A has persistence length 50 nm. Polymer B has persistence length 2 nm (and hence an effective segment length 1/25 as great as A’s). Imagine that you could take two tiny pairs of pliers, grab a polymer at two points separated by 10 nm, and bend it. A. Which polymer would be easier to bend? Why? B. Which polymer do you think would be a better model for single-stranded DNA? Why?

A lab developed a new biodegradable polymer. The polymer sample was tested with Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). It was found that the heats of melting DHm and crystallization DHc of the polymer are 61 J/g and 5 J/g respectively. X-ray diffraction was used to measure the crystallinity( Xc) of the polymer sample. Xc was determined to be 55%. The polymer was then mixed with drug molecules to fabricate drug-encapsulated thin film. DSC analysis of the film showed that the heats...
